Highslide - JavaScript thumbnail viewer - wonderful

Highslide JS is a piece of JavaScript that streamlines the use of thumbnail images on web pages. The library offers these features and advantages:

  • No plugins like Flash or Java required.
  • Popup blockers are no problem. The images expand within the active browser window.
  • Single click. After expanding the image, the user can scroll further down or leave the page without restoring the image.
  • The approach uses two separate images. No heavy full-size image packed into thumbnail display size! The full-size image is loaded in the background either on page load or when the user clicks the thumb. You specify this option in the script’s settings.
  • Compatibility and safe fallback. If the user has disabled JavaScript or the JavaScript fails in any way, the browser redirects directly to the image itself. This fallback is able to cope with most exceptions and incompatibilities.

Better than Lightbox? I think so…

What makes a great photo?

What makes a photo popular?

To my surprise, this photo is by far and away my most popular. I think it’s cool; nice colours, interesting lines, but I didn’t expect the amount of interest.

Subjective eh? But what makes a great pic? I wonder…

Fox News - funny if it wasn’t real

I have been obsessed with Fox News for about 5 years. When I came to university in 2000, I had never heard of them. However, my good friend Jimbo (Martin Farelly) and I began trawling our new Sky TV set back in 2003 for information on the forthcoming Iraq War. Indeed, we had too much time on our hands back then. Coffee mornings, 4ft fry-ups, Playstation sessions lasting days, buying 2ft sofas for Jimbo’s 3ft bedroom, abusing Alison Jones and admiring the circus freak-show that was J J Barber.

Despite studying politics at Sheffield University at the time, it was only during the Iraq debacle that I became very interested in the discipline. Sure, we had empassioned debates at home about various issues, but being exposed to the dark side of the American Right and the lies of its media arm left me stunned and desperate to learn more. It almost felt like Chris Morris had gotten hold of the Fox boss, kicked his ass and taken over and decided to things his way.

Days on end we spent open-mouthed at the madness Fox spewed; Bill O Reilly, Sean Hannity, Neil Cavuto, John Gibson and co in their “no-spin zone”. It was a revelation. And people bought it! And still do! Admittedly, we have our own issues of media spin, but is the BBC on a par with this lie machine? Even Sky News, another conservative Murdoch outlet, is reasonably unbiased.

I know it’s bad for me, but I still watch it now from time to time, just to keep abridge on what isn’t true but is being believed in America. I came across this article today; it does a great job in showing just how much this channel should be removed from the planet. Here are my favourite screencaps of the lies or mistruths it exposes:
