Sainsbury’s & I discuss plastic bag usage

Sainsbury’s, like many other big supermarkets, make a big deal to us about their green credentials. “We now have compostable packaging!” “All our bananas are fair trade!” - All good stuff and I support all these initiatives. A few weeks ago, Sainsbury’s were even giving away their Bags for Life for free.

However, no matter how hard I try, no matter how much I hint, no matter how often I go in, my local Sainsbury’s will not cease in infuriating me with their insistance on giving me plastic carrier bags!

I must visit the shop at least once a day (not good I know, but there is no other alternative in my part of Brixton) and every day I take either a cloth bag or my backpack to put my few bits in. There are only 5 or 6 members of staff and they all know me now and for the last 5 months I have used my own bags every day.

BBC new home page - beta

iBBC? BBC Homepage? MyBBC? MYBEEB?

Who knows but the new personalised, customisable BBC homepage looks interesting. Very chunky, very user-friendly, very AJAX packed and very clean.

However, as Rico asked, why fix it to 1024? Surely the Beeb out of any website should cater for all, including the 800 x 600 users?

Ensuring your HTML emails look great and get delivered

Following on the from the launch of the fantastic Email Standards Project on Friday, David Greiner writes a great article on how to cope with HTML email in the here and now:

“Boy what a difference 18 months can make! In my last Vitamin article I was singing the praises of standards based email and encouraging the use of CSS in your email designs. While the browser market has continued to strive for better standards support, a major player in the email industry has unfortunately done the opposite.

With the release of Outlook 2007 earlier this year using the Word rendering engine instead of Internet Explorer, my recommendations just don’t make the cut any more. I’ve decided to revisit my original suggestions and bring them more in line with today’s baseline. I’ve also had a good look at the feedback and comments from the original post. Getting your email to look good is only one piece of the puzzle, so I’ve dedicated the second half of this article to recommendations on how you can improve the chances of your emails actually getting delivered.”
